Tuesday of the Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
St. Jerome Emiliani, priest
St. Josephine Bakhita, virgin
Scripture from today's Liturgy of the Word:
Genesis 1:20--2:4
Psalm 8:4-9
Mark 7:1-13
A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:
So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,
because on it he rested from all the work he had done in creation. (Gn 2:3)
While we are free from strict adherence to the Mosaic Law, there remain parts of it that still have meaning today. Keeping the Sabbath holy is one of them.
Years ago I knew a fellow Secular Franciscan who had a unique way of honoring the Lord's day. The day went something like this. First, early mass started the holy day followed by a day filled with family activities and nothing else. That meant the family spent the entire day together and played ball in the yard, read, prayed, napped and even prepared the evening meal together. There was no television or radio allowed, just good time together as a family and with the Lord. The result? This was one of the closest families I ever knew and remains so today as the two sons have matured, with one in the seminary.
The Lord rested on the last day. We should too, and will find rewards beyond belief.
